The 15th European football week (EFW) of Special Olympics – “United football” and football fitness.


A special week when the European football community opens up the possibilities for players with intellectual disabilities

The European football week of Special Olympics in Ukraine is supported by UEFA RESPECT and will take place on May 23 – 30, 2015. More than a thousand of athletes with intellectual disabilities will participate in this event in 15 regions of the country.

The purpose of the EFW is to create more opportunities in football for people with intellectual disabilities. About 50,000 Special Olympics athletes will compete in the 400 football events in 50 countries of the continent with the support of UEFA, 37 National football federations, 80 football clubs throughout Europe including the official representatives and messengers of Special Olympics in Europe Celtic FC, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, teams of the Italian Serie A and B, Bundesliga, Polish Ekstraklasa, Hungarian NB I – OTP Bank League, Ukrainian Premier League, as well as Netherlands and Belgian leagues.

Within the EFW 2015 Special Olympics of Ukraine (SOU) will hold numerous local tournaments, two major Regional football tournaments in the West of Ukraine (Vinnytsia) and the South (Kherson), all-Ukrainian seminar for football coaches, the visit of Premier League games, exhibitions of artwork on the football theme. The main event of the EFW in Ukraine will become the National SOU tournament among male and female teams in Nizhyn on May 25-26, 2015 at the stadium “Spartak”.

The Director of SOU Andrii Pidvarko noticed: “The EFW provides a unique opportunity for all the participants to show themselves in football receiving in return some recognition and respect, acceptance and inclusion in the football family. Thanks to the support of the football Federation of Ukraine, football Premier League, McDonald’s Ukraine Ltd., Coca-Cola Ukraine, Nizhyn M. Gogol State University and the Association of sports journalists of Ukraine this year we expect to involve new fans and volunteers into Special Olympics football.”

EFW 2015 encourages to play “United football” when in the same team will play healthy footballers and those with disabilities, as well as it encourages to focus on football fitness and healthy way of life.

Football is one of the most popular sports of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia among 33 official Olympic sports. 133,000 persons with intellectual disabilities go in for it in 58 countries.
