Together we can do anything!


On December 20, 2016 in Vinnytsia, in the family recreational park Kids’ Planet, an inclusive event “Together we can do anything” was held according to the Young Athletes program by Special Olympics Ukraine. 40 children without disabilities and 20 SOU athletes took part in the event.

New year sports day for Special Olympics athletes from Zhymomyr


On December 23, 2016 – the New year sports day for Special Olympics athletes from Zhymomyr was held.The participants of the event were the teams of Father Frost and Snow Maiden, 32 athletes of Special Olympics and volunteers of the university “Ukraine”. The greetings and presents were received from the Department for Famility and Youth Affairs of Zhytomyr city council, Coca-Cola Foundation, Ruden Company .

Сonference of Special Olympics Ukraine (SOU)


On December 25, 2016 in Kyiv, 24 participants of SOU Conference, including 16 plenipotentiary delegates of SOU regional departments, summed up the organization activities of the current year, approved reports by Serhyi Komisarenko, SOU President, and Andrii Pidvarko, Executive Director, and approved changes in SOU by-laws as demanded by the changes in the current Ukrainian laws.

Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 in Austria

 „Heartbeat for the World“ – under this slogan the 11th Special Olympics WorldWinter Games 2017 for people with intellectual disabilities are going to takeplace from March 14th to 25th 2017.About 3000 athletes of 110 nations are expected to participate in the World Winter Games 2017, which will be the largest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world in 2017.

The Special Olympics movement is committed to creating a world where every person, regardless of their ability or disability, is accepted, welcomed and valued – a world of inclusion and mutual respect, without bias or prejudice.


Special Olympics Ukraine athletes are going to Austria to defend the honor of their country and to demonstrate their skills and abilities to the whole world.

The Ukraine delegation comprises 18 athletes and 5 coaches, and will compete in 3 winter sports:

Father Frost in the Kids’ Country


On December 18, Father Frost visited young athletes of Special Olympics Ukraine in Kyiv at the childen’s party, which was organized by NGO Socium supported by Special Olympics Ukraine.

Final Tournament of the European Basketball Week 2016 in Ukraine


Between November 26 and Decemeber 4, 2016, the traditional European Basketball Week of Special Olympics was held. Local basketball competitions among people with intellectual disabilities took place in 8 regions of Ukraine, with more than 900 SOU basketball players having taken part in them.

15-16 October 2016, duringthe 11th tour of Ukrainian Premier League, young football players of Special Olympics Ukraine were proud to escort professional football players on the pitch. The kids and the teams’ captains wore SOU-branded t-shirts, and Special Olympics flag was demonstrated in front of the central stand.

Unified by football: FC Dynamo Kyiv and Special Olympics Ukraine


It’s become a good tradition to organize meetings between SOU football players from the boarding school #15 and FC Dynamo Kyiv Fan Club. This time, on October 7, Dynamo legend and USSR team player Volodymyr Muntyan came to deliver master class and to tell curious football stories to SOU athletes. The opportunity to play with the legend, take a photo and get autograph will be a lifelong memory for most of them. 

III Special Olympics Open Games were held in Ukraine


III Special Olympics Open Games were held in Ukraine. Between 15-18 September 2016, Lviv hosted III Special Olympics Open Games (SOOG2016). These were the largest international competition for people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine.
Athletes competed in 8 sports of Special Olympics, that is football, floorball, unified basketball, table tennis, aquatics, open water swimming, kayaking and bocce. 6 sports locations were involved.
The competitions hosted 600 participants: 16 delegations from 8 countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Belgium), 28 delegations from 17 regions of Ukraine, and representatives of more than ten districts of Lviv region. 131 medals were awarded. In addition to the sports part, the guests enjoyed excursions and tours around Lviv and tasted delicious coffee in the best coffee houses downtown.

For 18 young participants aged 4-7 y.o. from Donetsk, Rivne and Lviv regions, the Young Athletes program was held. Another program, which was presented at SOOG 2016, was Healthy Athletes, which was delivered by Cupsa Liliana from Special Olympics Romania.

SOOG 2016 were organized by NGO SAMI,  and supported by Lviv City Council, Lviv Regional Administration, Lviv State University of Physical Culture. Coca-Cola Foundation provided t-shirts for Ukrainian athletes and travel some SO Ukrainian teams,  NGO “Socium” gave sweet gifts to all participants.
















Alina Perederiy, Doctor of Science in physical education and sports, professor of the Department of Olympic, professional and adaptive sport, coordinator of Special Olympics Ukraine in Lviv region, greeted the participants during the opening ceremony and said: «Our University have been collaborating with Special Olympics for more than 10 years. We want to teach our students how to organize events for people from diverse groups, children of different age, from different countries.»
Andrii Porodko, Head of SOOG organizing committee,head of NGO SAMI is already on the way to the next years’ games: “It’s the fourth time in a row that we organize international competitions in Special Olympics. In 2013, it was one sport and 60 athletes from Poland and Ukraine. Today, in 2016 it’s 8 sports, 600 athletes and 8 countries from SO Europe/Eurasia. Weare planning to holdthenextgamesinMay 2017. Just in a week, SOOG organizing committee will gather again to make evaluation of SOOG 2016 and start preparation to SOOG 2017.”

The Day of Physical Culture and Sport in Ukraine, on the 11th of September 2016, kicked off the European Week of Sport, which was held between 10-17 September under BeActive slogan, with many sports events taking place all over the country.
